Soweto – the size and population of Singapore!! πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦

We were early for our walking tour of Soweto – so popped in to the arts centre opposite and asked a young woman if there was a coffee shop. She asked if we would come and meet her reading group and we spent a lovely half an hour with 7 children aged 8-13. Tony got stuck in reading to them and doing origami whilst I chatted with the woman who is the same age as Ella. She had just qualified as a social worker, her mum had died 4 years previously and she was the sole carer for her 8 year old sister, and had set this group up voluntarily with no funding. As we said goodbye to the kids there was a huge funeral leaving the centre – some great dancing and singing kept us entertained!

Soweto – a population of around 6 million people! We learned a lot when visiting both Madela’s and Desmond Tutu’s homes. The big organised tours were horribly touristy so we were glad it was just the 2 of us and our guide.
